What Makes St Edward’s School Stand Out?

Oct 13, 2020

At St Edward’s School we are committed to preparing young people to live life to the full. We have the highest expectations of all of our students, and they leave us ready to go to some of the best universities in the world, to exciting employment opportunities; or empowered to take their next steps in learning.

Our most-able students achieved outcomes to equal and exceed those of Grammar Schools nationally and this success is a tribute to the hard work of students and their families, and our dedicated and caring staff who so often go the extra mile in helping students to succeed. Performance tables, however, never capture the spirit of a school, and it is this that is at the heart of our success.

St Edward’s was shortlisted as one of the finalists in the ‘National Secondary School of the Year’ category in the National School Awards 2019-20. The shortlisting recognised St Edward’s innovative and passionate teachers, and the academic outcomes that place St Edward’s among the top performing schools in the country, combined with its strong approaches to securing the wellbeing of its students and staff.

Our teachers have also come to national attention, with two finalists in the National Teacher of the Year Awards. Subject Leader for History, Government and Politics, Sara Sinaguglia, received the Silver “Pearson National Teaching Award” in London in the last Academic Year. Sara was commended for ‘bringing learning alive’ by providing incredible opportunities for her students including the hosting of a live interview with John Bercow, the then Speaker of the House of Commons.

Our innovative approaches have helped the school stand out among other schools across the country on more than one occasion. This includes our work on the ‘My Resilience in Adolescence’ Project. This national research project is exploring the ways in which schools can help young people to improve their resilience and manage their emotional health, and is being run by a number of top universities, including Oxford and London Universities. The BBC have featured both our successes in Young Enterprise awards, and our approaches to student wellbeing in their broadcasts.

All of the above is a testament to the commitment of everyone who works at St Edward’s. We are demonstrating, year on year, that you can secure outstanding academic outcomes for students within a happy learning environment, as we nurture the journey from childhood to adulthood.
