Core Maths (Level 3 Certificate)

Most A Level subjects include an element of mathematical or statistical analysis, some of which is beyond the scope of GCSE Mathematics.

Most A Level subjects include an element of mathematical or statistical analysis, some of which is beyond the scope of GCSE Mathematics. This is where Core Maths come in. Core Maths is equivalent to an AS Level and allows students to keep practicing their mathematical skills in a more real-life context. It is an extremely highly recommended companion to any 3 A Levels you study.

Course Content

You will have 6 lessons per fortnight of Core Maths, so it doesn’t use a whole block of 9 lessons per fortnight that an A Level would use. We use the AQA exam board (Level 3 in Mathematical Studies) for this and cover the following topics:

Compulsory Content (Paper 1)

 – Analysis of Data

 – Personal Finance

 – Modelling and Estimation

 – Critical Analysis (Paper 2)

Optional Content (Paper 2) – Choose 1 of the following sets for exams, but you will be taught both

 – Paper 2A

  • Normal Distribution
  • Confidence Intervals
  • Correlation and Regression

– Paper 2B

  • Critical Path Analysis
  • Expectation
  • Cost-Benefit Analysis

Where the Course Leads

Universities and employers alike consider Core Maths to be a great asset and students who have studies this course are starting to get lowered offers from universities, as they are proving that they can cope with the mathematical demands of a higher course.

Entry Requirements

Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics, a Grade 4 would also be considered.
