# A Level Further Mathematics

### Why Study A Level Further Mathematics?

Have you ever wondered what is happening when your calculator displays “Maths Error”? Or what would happen if you could square root a negative number? Further maths is where you find out. The course studies previously studied concepts at a deeper level, whilst introducing some new concepts that show how the ties between different areas of maths are much stronger than students previously thought.

### Course Content

This course is different to other A Levels. Upon completion of the course, you will have two A Levels – one in Mathematics and one in Further Mathematics. To achieve this, you will complete the A Level Mathematics course in Year 1 and the A Level Further Mathematics in Year 2, which means you will be taught in a specific Further Mathematics group. This group is given more hours per cycle, as they are covering the content for 2 A Levels in the same time as 1 would usually be completed.

For the A Level Mathematics content, please see the A Level Mathematics page. This content is completed in Year 12 and the exams sat at the end of Year 12.

We do the Edexcel A Level in Further Mathematics (9FM0), which is the same exam board as the A Level in Mathematics, meaning consistency in style of questioning and resources. Year 13 students cover the following content:

Core Pure Mathematics

- Proof
- Complex Numbers
- Matrices
- Further Algebra and Functions
- Further Calculus
- Further Vectors
- Polar Co-ordinates
- Hyperbolic Functions
- Differential Equations

2 Options from the following topics:

- Further Pure Mathematics
- Further Mechanics
- Further Statistics
- Decision Mathematics

Options are not decided until the end of Year 12, when students are more aware of what each option will involve. The group will get to choose between them which 2 options the group will study.

It is assessed with the following equally weighted papers:

Paper 1 – Core Pure Mathematics

– Any of the content from above

– 1hour 30mins, 75 marks

Paper 2 – Core Pure Mathematics

– Any of the content from above

– 1hour 30mins, 75 marks

Paper 3 – Option 1

– 1 of the options from above

– 1hour 30mins, 75 marks

Paper 4 – Option 2

– 1 of the options from above

– 1hour 30mins, 75 marks

All exams are calculator papers and the department has graphics calculators that can be used both in lessons and in exams.

### Where the course leads

Students who study A Level Further Mathematics tend to be those who wish to pursue a STEM-based discipline at university, typically Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics or Engineering. However, the skills developed on this course can be applied to any discipline or higher-level apprenticeship.

### Entry Requirements

Grade 7 at GCSE Mathematics

You must study A Level Mathematics to study AS or A Level Further Mathematics
