The established extended project qualification is a free-standing qualification. Students work independently on a topic in which they have a personal interest or is an aspect of a subject they are studying within school. The Extended Project is equivalent to half an A Level. It is worth up to 70 UCAS points. Students are allocated a supervisor and complete a log book record of their project management.
The topic for the project is chosen by the student and agreed with an allocated teacher, who then acts as his or her supervisor.
The student has to show that they can plan, deliver and present an extended piece of work at Level 3 of the National Qualifications Framework. The topic chosen by a student, allows the student to complete a comprehensive, rigorous private study with a solution, argument or artifact presented to an audience.
A final written piece of work describing the project management of the subject then forms part of the submission. There is no examination for this project.

Where the course leads
Many universities find the depth of independent study beneficial to future learning, and will take this into account at UCAS application and interview. Additional points gained assist in UCAS admissions.
Grade 5 in a GCSE subject most closely connected to the topic chosen.
