Design and Technology at St Edward's offers students the opportunity to experience, learn, test and develop new skills in four key areas. Learners are given opportunities in Food and Nutrition, Textiles and Fashion, Graphic Products, Systems and Resistant Material Technology. This initial introduction in Year 7 leads through to option choices for GCSE and A Level.
These key areas of experience open eyes and awareness of Technology to all students following the National Curriculum guidelines whilst using our own projects. Using a variety of materials, CAD, CAM and comprehensive subject knowledge students expand their experience of Technology and Design through each year. Technology and Design is exciting, innovative and thought provoking.
Key Stage 3
During Key Stage 3 students follow a National Curriculum course enveloped within our own project and product based activities. We are able to adapt and differentiate for our students, encouraging them to think, enjoy and develop design skills, modelling and creating exciting products that are both relevant and contemporary whilst extending design and manufacturing experience. Programmes of study are designed to be both engaging and creative, whilst simultaneously preparing students for the increasing challenge of the new Key Stage 4 and 5 specifications.
Year 7 - students follow a rotation of 4 skills areas, allowing initial experience and time to develop aptitude and knowledge in each skills area. A programme of study for each area is designed to engage, practise and extend skills and knowledge. Projects include electronic power testers, packaging systems, preparation of food products and a functional diary cover. These practical occupations are supported by knowledge based activities, extending understanding and application of techniques.
Year 8 - having experienced the basics of technology within the Year 7 rotation, students are further stretched in Year 8. A rotation of 3 skills areas are followed. A programme of study for each area is designed to engage, practise and extend skills and knowledge. Projects include scale and design of a container home, mood lighting, preparation of food and meals, and a smart textile product. Again these are supported by knowledge based activities, extending understanding an application of techniques.
Year 9 - this readies students for a GCSE Technology option, further developing student experience and skills. Projects include prototyping to scale, communication techniques, bling box production using a variety of materials and nutritional studies within food production.
Key Stage 4
In Year 10 students follow the new specification for GCSE in Food Preparation and Nutrition (WJEC) for this and subsequent years. The existing specification GCSE Product Design Graphic Products (Edexcel), Product Design Resistant Materials (Edexcel), and Textiles Technology (AQA). From September 2017 Year 10 students will take the GCSE in Product Design (Edexcel), Technical awards equivalent to GCSE in Textiles and Materials Technology.
In Year 11 students currently follow the existing specification GCSE Product Design Graphic Products (Edexcel), Product Design Resistant Materials (Edexcel), Food and Nutrition (AQA) and Textiles Technology (AQA).
Pathways after Year 11
AS and A2 Product Design at St Edward's follows on from Technical Award: Materials Technology. This course is very well suited to students who enjoy manufacturing and are considering careers in engineering, furniture production, mechanical and ship building construction and other related opportunities. Upon completion, learners can also progress to Technical Certificates and other Level 3 vocational qualifications such as an NVQ Carpentry or Manufacturing and Production.
Key Stage 5
Product Design - Students currently follow an AS and A2 pathway. Year 12 students will complete their AS work this summer and continue to the A Level (Edexcel) for examination in 2018. This includes a final project usually related to the Built Environment or Product Design. From September 2017 Product Design A Level (Edexcel) will run as a linear course with the option for the first year only to sit the AS.
Fashion and Textiles - BTEC Level 3 continues to run with units over Years 12 and 13.
Food Science and Nutrition - BTEC Level 3. From September 2017 this course offers students a Key Stage 5 option to follow their path from GCSE or other subjects.
